Robin's nest under my window

Baby robins, day four

May 31 - This is about all you see all day long now - chicks with beaks open, waiting for food. I wouldn't want to be the one keeping those hungry little bellies filled.

Both adults are very attentive to the chicks and the surrounding area. For as dirty as birds usually are, the nest is spotless. There are no feathers or debris on the ground under the nest.

It seems that the male and female take equal turns covering the chicks to warm them and also to hunt for food and to feed the chicks.

Stay tuned for future updates and more about robins. The daily pictures will be at Flickr.

I wonder if the birds would abandon the nest if it had been touched by humans. It would be interesting to try.

I hope "anonymous" lets us know what happens.

Julie - Great photos of the 3 little birdies. We have a robin's nest on our front patio in a fake tree with lights! She also produced 3 eggs. Up until yesterday, there were 3 babies in the nest, maybe 10 days old, but one is gone! I'm hoping that it was old enough to fly away and not be taken away by a stray cat. Last week, one of them fell out of the nest onto a patio table that I put under the tree in case one of them fell out. I used rubber tongs to pick it up and place it back in the nest. Then 2 more days after that, I'll assume the same one fell out again. I grabbed my tongs and placed it back in the nest. The mother continued to feed all 3 of them. The remaining 2 have been fluttering their wings, so I'm hoping that it's soon that they leave the nest on their own. A couple of days after that happens, we are removing the nest and blocking that open area of the tree with something so that this doesn't happen again. Although I've enjoyed watching this whole process, it's a heavily trafficked area, and my husband and I started using the garage to come and go. I have to admit it was stressful for me when the little one fell out twice. Thank you for your journal, it helped me into figuring out when these guys will be on their own. Sandi
