Rare white lions on public view

The first white lion cubs to be born at a UK safari park are going on public view in the West Midlands.

The cubs, three females and one male called Kiara, Lara, Toto and Casper, were born in August last year.

They were bred at the West Midland Safari Park near Bewdley, Worcs, to mother Maryn who was brought to the park in 2004 with three others.

White lions are a rare species found in an area of South Africa. There are thought to be 130 left in the world.

What magnificent animals. I didn't know there were white lions. Thanks for posting these.

The San Francisco zoo has a white tiger who is the star of the whole cat house.

This drives me crazy. These animals have obviously been bred by man with a less than useless trait. Lions are the color they are for a very obvious reason. A white lion would have a very difficult time sneaking up on anything in its native habitat.

Then it's a good thing they live in a zoo.

For anonymous who said "it drives me crazy etc etc" Read the original post. It says "White lions are a rare species found in an area of South Africa" therefore NOT bred by man.
Albino and other forms of amelanistc animals occur naturally in the wild. Man wasn't around with genetic engineering when the first albino mammoth was born was he?

White Lions are perfectly capable of hunting in the wild as has been proven by the introduction of Marah and her 3 cubs into a sub-habitat of 300 hectares in Timbavati in South Africa. Their hunting average is currently one wildebeest every 3 days so hardly a problem being white really.

White lions are one of the most astonishing and beautiful species in the animals' world. they really need to be preserved just as many more species that are nearly extinct today.

actually 'anonomous driven crazy' white lions originate in the wild of Timbavati, south africa , they have a great and spiritual meaning for the indigenous people. and in fact, if you do your research (i suggest you go to www.whitelions.org,you will see that research has proven that infact they are in some ways more advanced in their hunting abilities than their tawny cousins. they have been seen to role around in the dust to improve their camoflague before a hunt and actually generally have more success than the tawny lions at hunting.
however it is sad but true that they are now being bred by men in south africa purely for rich europeans and americans to shoot at close range in what we call 'canned hunts'. it is sick and a very sad state of affairs for humanity to find oursleves in.
so i suggest if you want to leave negative comments, that firstly you do your homework , and secondly leave it on canned hunt websites!!

facts about huntig

White lions (lions) are different from other cats by almost always hunting in groups. When they are hunting small prey, each lion has its own animal to hunt; with larger and more dangerous prey co-operation is required to split a herd or pull down and kill one animal.
Most of the hunting is done by the females. When in a pride, the males take what food they want from the females. Cubs get what the adults leave, and in times of food shortage, starvation is their major cause of death.

A lion’s body is built for fast charges of speed instead of slow endurance. When hunting, they stalk their prey, moving slowly and carefully into striking distance before making their move. The hunt itself is likely to be a short charge as opposed to a long chase, and will more often fail than succeed. If the prey is brought down, lions bite it at the muzzle or mouth and strangle it before beginning to feed.

Lions are well-known for hunting cooperatively, but things are a little more complicated than that. Cooperation is most common when lions tackle large prey such as buffalo or giraffe. Lions will occasionally cooperate when hunting small or average sized prey, but in these cases it's far more common to find one female hunting alone while her companions observe from safe distance. If the prey is captured they will then join their companion at the kill.
Male lions are also famous for depending on females to do all of the hunting, but this is not strictly the case. Males spend a good deal of time as travelers away from pride females, and during these periods they must defend themselves. When the white lions are alone, the males will often hunt warthog, typically by chasing one into a hole and then digging it out. Males are also expert hunters of larger prey where size and body are more important than speed. They are especially skilled at catching buffalo which are an important prey species throughout the lion's range.

Actually Becky, tigers have stripes on their skin as well as in their coat... so it wouldn't take an expert to tell the difference.

Also just to clear up, these cats are not albino. If they were they would have red or pink eyes(i.e. the pupils would appear red and have pink iris) They may in fact be leucistic.

The majority of white lions end up in captivity because they can't fend for themselves in the wild. The prey always sees them coming.. They are easy to spot and very valuable to poachers.. White Lions are sort of like God's cruel prank.. But man are they beautiful!

On Hunting;
Lions are not the swift merciful killers some of these posts would have you believe. If the prey is sufficiently small they will simply begin eating whether the prey is dead or not, especially warthogs and young buffalo. YouTube is full of videos of animals being eaten alive by lions.
